Vastu Tips for Living Room

Entrance and Main door area

The Recommended direction for Main door should be either one of them East West or North, The main entry point is to draw good energy, money and happiness inside your home. Therefore, it is important to keep it very clean, well lit ,dirt and clutter free and should look spacious so that the energy can circulate inside out.

Wind chimes can bring in auspicious vibration, placing Ganesh idols near door in foyer area facing door will ward off evils, Hang a bell or wind chime near the entrance. Its auspicious sound will act as a magnet to pull good energy, health and money. Also, keep the entrance well-lit by using a beautiful lamp or proper lighting just above the door.

Avoid red shade inside your house, colour with blue to generate prosperity.

Furniture

Furniture are important part of a house, make sure to always place the furniture in the West or South direction and away from the wall to allow the flow of energy even from the back. The smaller sofas can have a window behind but not the main one. Prefer rectangular sofas over circular sofas. Same goes for side tables.

The entertainment units should be designed in the South-East, North or Eastern wall of the living room. Since the living room is the the area for meeting your guest, family member avoid the tendencyto display every possible artefacts and other items here. Avoid putting lot of it here. Keep your living room uncluttered with enough space for the unobstructed flow of energ.

Pooja Rooms

If you have a small area dedicated for Pooja or prayers, place the Pooja shelf or cabinet in the northeast part of the room.

Wall Pictures & Paintings

Do not put pictures that depict sadness, violence or loneliness. Do not put running horses in your living area or any area of your house. Have a family picture in a metal frame. The best place is the northeast wall.

Plants & Flowers

Put lush green plants inside your home, like lucky bamboo, money plant etc. Lush green plants in the northeast corner will bring you the maximum good fortune. Make sure to take good care of the plant s and keep them healthy. Assigning a special place to the money plant in your home will attract more wealth.

Clock

Make sure your clock is working and shows the correct time. Please ensure that any non working/functional clock are either fixed or removed from the home, a snatand still clock can make your finance stand still.

Lighting

Place lights in all corners and centre to keep your house well-lit throughout day and night. Sufficient lighting either natural lights or artificial lights is required to attract positive energy in your house, dark house or unlighted area attract negative energies.

Vastu for Bedroom

Your bedroom should be an escape from the stress of your everyday life, whether those include your work, children, health or friendships.

A good Vastu enabled bedroom will bring more good luck, prosperity as well as the romantic passion missing from your love or married life.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom should always be located in the southwest part of the house because it represents the earth element and heaviness, thus making it suitable for the family heads.

Ideally, paint your bedroom off-white, baby pink or cream. Avoid dark colours. Colours brighten your day and improves your mood, health and happiness. Your bed should be placed with the head towards the east or south. Avoid a bedroom in the north-east or south-east zone of the house. In the south-east, it may result in quarrels among the couple.

Place a bed against a solid wall support and not below a window. Use a solid wooden bed compared to metal or iron as wood produces more positive energy.

Bed

The bedroom in the north-east may cause a health issue. Also, place your bed diagonally opposite the bedroom door, not directly in front of the bedroom door. This will give you some privacy.

Placing your head in the north direction while sleeping is considered dangerous. So plan your bed and sleeping position accordingly.

Avoid a mirror in front of your bed as the reflection of one’s sleeping body in a mirror is inauspicious. Ideally, you should move your television out of your bedroom as it’s a distraction. If you can’t, try placing it far away from your bed so as to not get in the way of the bed’s positive energy. Southwest corner is the best place for wardrobes. For dressing table, north or east wall is the best option.

Lighting

There is nothing sexy about a well-lit room. Placing lamps on either side of the bed can give your room a romantic glow. For the best Vastu, avoid bright, garish lights or ceiling lights over your bed. Try to get as much natural light as you can from the window.

Colors

The most sensual colors for the bedroom are skin tone colors like pink, blue, purple or grey in lighter shades. These colors add romance and spark intimacy.

Artwork and Paintings

Avoid lonely and sad photos of yourself, photos of friends and relatives, etc. These could invite possible financial loss or robbery. Replace these images with pictures or symbols of romantic couples or some motivational pictures to rejuvenate yourself.

Clutter

Keep your bedroom clean. Have ample space between your bed, cupboards and desks to have a free flow of energy. Use minimum furniture. Do not keep things that are too old and are not in use for years clocks, watches, electronic equipment, broken artefacts or machinery, in your bedroom. Clutter disturbs the energy flow and creates disharmony in the house.

Get rid of any extra papers, trash, silly photos, useless gifts. If you have a too much sentimental attachment to these items, put them in storage.

  • Never sleep under an overhead beam.
  • Do not place the temple/Pooja room in the bedroom.
  • Do not hang photographs of deceased ancestors on the wall.
  • Remove all broken items.
  • If you have attached bathrooms and toiles with your bedroom, keep the door shut when not in use.
  • Mop the floor at least once a week with sea salt added to the water as it removes negative energy.

Vastu for Kitchen

Dining area should be placed in North-west position of the kitchen or living room. Dining table should be of solid material preferably of wood and placed away from the walls. It should be of uniform tone and the shape should be round or oval in order to stimulate communication and maintain the relationship between the families. Avoid dark material or colour in the dining table or area.

The kitchen is considered as the main source of energy as it represents nourishment and relationship harmony for the occupants. Especially ladies, they may compromise on not getting the living room or bedroom right, but not the kitchen. So make it right in the first place. Fire rules the kitchen and governs the south-east direction. So ideal kitchen location is the south-east direction. If unavailable, then go for the north-west direction. Make sure that the kitchen is not over or under the Pooja room or bathroom. It shouldn’t share a wall with the bathroom or pooja room.

Vastu Shastra lays emphasis on a well-ventilated kitchen so that there is a free flow of energies. The window should open in the east bringing in the fresh morning light into your kitchen. Exhaust should also be placed on the eastern wall.

Use vibrant colors for the kitchen. Green, yellow, red, chocolate, rose, orange is fine. Avoid black, grey or other dark and depressing color. For kitchen flooring, marble and ceramic are shiny, easy to maintain and Vastu compliant too.

Sink, Stove, Oven

Once again since stove represents fire, the direction for it should be south-east. According to Vastu rules for the kitchen, the cook should be facing towards east while cooking. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and stove next to each other as that can lead to arguments as it creates a water and fire clash.

The cabinets should be made in the southern and western walls of the kitchen. The northern and eastern walls should be avoided and best be left empty. Have some open display shelving. This little Vastu trick opens up a small, confined space and lightens the energy by creating a better flow. Oven, refrigerator, mixer, microwave, etc; all the electrical equipment should be placed in the south or south-east direction of the kitchen. Avoid the north-eastern direction.

Dining

Dining area in the west is best, second best in the north or east. The head of the family must always face east while eating. Keep the number of dining chairs even that is 2,4, 6 etc... Have square or rectangular dining tables over circular, oval or any other shape as far as possible. Place the dining table towards the south-west corner of the dining area, but make sure that dining table doesn’t touch the wall and it isn’t under a beam.

Use north-east of the dining area to keep drinking water. Provide wash-basin in north or east but not in south-east or north-west. As per vastu for kitchen & dinning area, you must make sure the kitchen and dining hall are built on the same floor. They should lye adjacent to one another. If dining place is a part of drawing-room (very common these days) then use a curtain or a potted plant as a demarcation.

Colours suitable for dinning area as per vastu are

  • Light green
  • Orange
  • Cream
  • light pink

Vastu for Bathroom

Location

Vastu Shastra suggests to construct the bathroom on the east side of the house, and toilets to be installed separately. Although it is not possible these days to have a toilet and bathroom separate because of lack of space. So, if they are attached, then do not build the toilet in the eastern direction. It should be constructed towards the west or south.

Ventilation

Proper ventilation is important for Bathrooms, large window with exhaust to let fresh air come inside bathroom is important for bathrooms .Large window can be placed in the north and smaller ventilators can be placed in the east or west. Lighting forms important part of the bathroom , bathroom should have sufficient natural lighting ,The window should allow light and air, which would help to dry up the bathroom very quickly. Always maintaining good and sufficient light and fresh air in the bathroom.

Article 2 : How to choose the best ply wood for your home interior

We all want the best material inside our house when planning for home interiors

Making choices for material is not easy especially when it comes to choosing the best ply wood for your interior.

What is the type of wood to be used and what are the specifications required for making a long-term investment?

All these are the few questions that keep running in everyone’s mind while planning for interiors

Here we have a list of best wood with specifications that can be used for home interior for a long-lasting quality.

Commercial Plywood

Plywood is the most used wood for home interior, it is the sheets of wood pasted together to make a plywood. There are many specifications under plywood based on the chemical treatment of the wood and the glue used to fix the sheets together.

Commercial ply wood come under various categories & Thickness, the common type of commercial plywood’s are

  • Softwood plywood
  • Hardwood plywood
  • Tropical plywood
  • Aircraft plywood
  • Decorative plywood (overlaid plywood)
  • Flexible plywood
  • Marine plywood

Categorization of Ply wood based on ISI Grades

  • IS: 303 - MR Plywood, BWP/BWR Plywood, Flexi Ply
  • IS: 710 - Marine Plywood
  • IS: 10701 - Structural plywood
  • IS: 5509-1980 - Fire Retardant Plywood
  • IS: 4990 - Shuttering Plywood

Categorization based on the particular wood (tree) used in its making.

  • For example:
  • Gurjan plywood
  • Teak plywood
  • Redwood plywood
  • SPF Plywood

The plywood is further divided into two grade that is MR grade and BWR grade. IS 303 is the ISI or BIS specification for the plywood.

MR Grade: MR Grade refers to Moisture Resistance Ply, they are basically ply that are mostly resistant to moisture and dampness plywood regularly used for home interiors. it is also known by its common name of commercial ply ISI 303 Grade.

For making furniture, commercial plywood is usually sufficient.(BWP/BWR resist water better than MR types. So for kitchen furniture using BWP/BWR is quite common)

BWR and BWP grades

The BWP (Boiling Water proof) grade is generally used to indicate grade of External grade blockboards (which are different from plywood and consist of blocks of softwood at the core) and BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) grade is used to indicate External grade plywood. Both these naming conventions BWP and BWR mean almost the same thing in terms of quality. Such types of plywood can be called adequately water-proof for most furniture requirements.

Block Board

Block Board Block board is a piece of wood with a plywood core and thin veneer panels on the top and bottom sides. blockboard is stiffer and less prone to bending, unlike plywood. Blockboard is generally used for building long book shelves, tables and benches, single and double beds, settees, and lengthy wall panels. It is light in weight, and is used extensively for building interior and exterior doors

Block board are used in furniture that requires strength , blackboards does not usually bend under pressure , they are highly suitable for making ,long study tables, long wardrobe and cupboard doors etc..

The top 5 uses of Block Boards are listed below.

  • For making long book shelves
  • For making tables and benches
  • Block Board Doors and Solid core flush doors
  • Single and double beds, and Settees (Diwan) for sitting.
  • Lengthy wall panels.

Particle Board

Particle board is cheaper, denser and more uniform than conventional wood and plywood and is substituted for them when cost is more important than strength and appearance

Particleboard or chipboard is manufactured by mixing wood particles or flakes together with a resin and forming the mixture into a sheet

Particle board has are not moisture resistant and hence we do not recommend them to be used for items that might require strength. Due to its low density and weight of the particle board motions a good amount of resistance for bending especially in the applications requiring long boards. A particle board can be used in the places for Making furniture that require lot of flexibility etc , they are not very durable and cannot undertake a lot of weight and does not have generally good nail holding capacity and we do not recommend them for wardrobes , cupboard, beds etc.

A significant disadvantage of particleboard is its susceptibility to expansion and discoloration from moisture absorption, particularly when it is not covered with paint or another sealer

Medium Density Fiber(MDF) or Engineered Wood

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure

It has been frequently observed that Low grade MDF may swell and break when saturated with water

There are different kinds of MDF (sometimes labeled by colour):

  • Ultralight MDF plate
  • Moisture resistant is typically green
  • Fire retardantMDF is typically red or blue
